About the Book of 2 John

AuthorJohn the apostle
Date Writtenc. AD 85–95
Original AudienceChristians facing false teaching (Docetism) and needing assurance

1 John is the most intimate book of the New Testament — the aged apostle writing as a father to his spiritual children: 'My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin' (2:1). The letter circles repeatedly around three great themes: light (God is light; in him there is no darkness), love (God is love; love is the defining mark of the Christian), and truth (we must test every spirit against the apostolic testimony about Jesus). The theological heart is 1 John 4:8 — 'God is love' — and the extended meditation on love that follows: 'This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins' (4:10). The letter was written to counter Docetism — the false teaching that Jesus only appeared to have a human body. John insists: 'Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God' (4:2). 1 John 1:9 — 'If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness' — is one of the most comforting promises in all of Scripture.
