About the Book of Philemon

AuthorPaul the apostle
Date Writtenc. AD 67 (Paul's last letter)
Original AudienceTimothy, Paul's son in the faith

2 Timothy is Paul's last letter — written from a Roman prison, likely awaiting execution, knowing he is about to die. It is the most personally moving of all Paul's letters. He writes to Timothy with urgency and love, knowing his time is short: 'The time for my departure is near. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith' (4:7-8). He warns about the last days (3:1-9), commands Timothy to 'preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season' (4:2), and charges him to handle God's Word correctly (2:15). The most important theological statement of the letter is 3:16-17: 'All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.' This is the New Testament's clearest declaration of biblical inspiration. 2 Timothy is a baton passing — from the apostle who ran the race to the next generation entrusted to carry it forward.
