About the Book of Ezekiel

AuthorUnknown (possibly Paul, Apollos, Barnabas, or Priscilla)
Date Writtenc. AD 60–70
Original AudienceJewish Christians tempted to return to Judaism

Hebrews is the most sophisticated theological argument in the New Testament. Written to Jewish Christians being pressured to abandon Christianity and return to the Jewish temple system, the author systematically demonstrates that Jesus is superior to everything in Judaism — superior to angels, to Moses, to the Levitical priesthood, to the Old Covenant itself. The book's central argument is that Jesus is the ultimate, final High Priest whose one sacrifice on the cross has made all Old Testament sacrifices obsolete and complete. Chapter 4 contains the famous declaration: 'The word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword.' Chapter 11 — 'the Hall of Faith' — lists Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Moses, Rahab, and others as witnesses to the life of faith, culminating in the call of chapter 12: 'Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.' Hebrews 13:8 — 'Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever' — is one of the most assuring declarations in all of Scripture.
