Isaiah is often called 'the fifth Gospel' because of its extraordinary, detailed prophecies of the coming Messiah. Written 700 years before the events it describes, Isaiah 53 describes a suffering servant who is 'pierced for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities' — recognized by the earliest Christians and by Jesus himself as a direct prediction of his crucifixion. Isaiah 7:14 predicts the virgin birth; Isaiah 9:6 announces 'unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given... his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace'; Isaiah 61:1 is the passage Jesus read in the Nazareth synagogue to announce his mission. The book divides into two sections: chapters 1-39 (judgment and warning, with threads of hope) and chapters 40-66 (comfort and restoration, beginning with the famous 'Comfort ye, comfort ye my people'). Isaiah 40:31 — 'Those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength; they will soar on wings like eagles' — is one of the most beloved promises in the Old Testament. Isaiah is quoted more in the New Testament than any other Old Testament book except the Psalms.
